You must be prepared! And though you go out of other stocks, please don't forget the necessities in the kitchen so cooking will be easy and fast. In anyway, mother's can make substitutes but why not save some of these stuff and be ready for a rainy season.
Check this out:
1. vinegar - for marinades
Vinegar is can be used to marinade fish. For example, debone one milkfish and cut in half (lengthwise), showing the inside part. Then, rub fish with salt. Sprinkle some pepper and put garlic on the corners of the fish. Marinade in vinegar for one or two days and you have got a fresh tasting yummy fish.
2. flour - for thickener and sauces
Flour can be used for omelets. Seasonal vegetables can be dipped into flour and fried quickly; like spinach. You can fry the spinach (kangkong family in the Philippines) leaf by leaf after dipping into flour. This is crunchy!
3. sugar - dessert, meat recipes
Sugar can be added to balance the salty taste in some food and recipes. Sugar and salt are very essential.
4. soy sauce - meat, seafood, chicken products; vegetables
Of course, for barbeque, chops (pork or lamb) or fried chicken. Don't make it too black, just to add flavoring and the special taste of soy sauce.
For easy pork or lamb chop: Marinade pork or lamb chops for 1-2 days in soy sauce. Pork and lamb must be rubbed with salt and lemon (calamansi in the Philippines). Grill chops or fry.
5. fish sauce - meat, seafood, chicken products; vegetables, soup
Fish sauce to add that special taste, especially in cooking vegetables.
Try this dip for mussels: Boil mussels in water with ginger. Remove from shells and set aside. Prepare fish sauce with vinegar and chile. Dip shells before eating. This is good as appetizer.
6. tomato sauce - meat, fish, rice
Tomato sauce is healthy food. If there isn't enough tomato sauce; mother's use tomato paste, catsup, or fresh tomatoes as substitutes. Tomato sauce is for pasta, pizza, taco's, or meat, etc. You can even use it for rice cooking paella.
Tomato sauce in various recipes can make your everyday food special.
7. ginger - vegetables, fish, chicken

Tomatoes taste good even when eaten raw. Good for sandwiches, salad, fish, meat and all food. Goes well with onions in spaghetti.
Make a sandwich: In a burger bun or cream bread, put in lettuce, tomato and cucumber. Then add chicken or fish fillet, burger, hot dog or tuna. Spread mayo or mustard. If you like, sprinkle some salt and pepper to taste.
9. garlic
Good for dips, and cooking meat or fried rice. Garlic fried rice is tasty. Vinegar with lots of garlic is good for sauces. Garlic cures hypertension.
10. Oil/butter
Necessary for frying and an ingredient in some dishes or baked products.
